Jehovah, Who...?: Part 1
by  Bobby Garner

"And I gave my heart to seek and to investigate by wisdom concerning all which is done under the heavens. It is an evil task God has given to the sons of men, to be afflicted by it. I have seen all the works which are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and striving after wind! What is crooked cannot be made straight; and that lacking cannot be numbered. I spoke with my heart, saying, Lo, I have become great and have increased wisdom over all that have been over Jerusalem before me. Yea, my heart has seen much wisdom and knowledge. And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness, and folly. I know that this also, it is striving after wind. For in much wisdom is much grief; and he who increases knowledge increases pain." - King Solomon

Those words are timeless truth, and they express the thought that the truth is too painful for many to contemplate, a point which numerous other writers have also noted. It presents the paradoxical question of; Why would anyone subject himself to such misery? As Solomon states here, it's an assignment which "God has given to the sons of men". However, it's immediately obvious that not all men agree and accept that challenge, which is not a problem among people who accept that we are creatures of free moral agency to choose. It does quickly become a problem whenever some, not satisfied in rejecting their own moral responsibility, must destroy all evidence that we were even created, not to mention that we might have responsibilities beyond those of our own selfish interests.

In Proverbs chapter 2 Solomon explains the process of discovery which leads to wisdom, and the very "knowledge of God". Then at Ecclesiastes 7:12 he presents it as a matter of life and death, "but the excellency of knowledge is that wisdom gives life to those who have it". At a time when I was far more limited in knowledge, I was forced to either accept those words as true, reject them outright, or simply believe them because they were part of the Bible. I didn't see any value in either of those options. so I set upon the task of discovering at least sufficient truth to allow me to make these determinations for myself. Some of my tentative conclusions are as follows...

Everything has already been written. It is no more or less true today than when Solomon first penned the words over three thousand years ago. The vast number of books written since then only increases the weariness from reading them. There truly is nothing new under the sun. This really becomes obvious if you study the background on any logical or reasonable position taken by anyone at anytime anywhere on this planet. Everything is rooted in very ancient writings, often with just enough change to place it in a modern setting, whether it's rule by a tyrant, an election campaign, a social tragedy, an act of war, or the "New Age" religion. It's an old story, often told but seldom ever heard, and rarely if ever learned. It is also the case in the subject matter of this essay. "Who is Jehovah that I should listen to His voice...?" Exodus 5:2

The problem for me or anyone who undertakes a discourse on this subject is the fact that the audience is already deeply divided on the issue, so nothing will change there. In fact, the evidence suggests that as knowledge becomes more abundant with the advent of the Internet, the polarization becomes more sharply focused on ever more narrower lines in every area of what was once considered to be civilized life. If it was civilized, how did it get in the shape it's in? It's as though everyone's ox is being gored with increasing intensity, and people are continuously being pushed toward a breaking point where they draw the proverbial line in the sand, and dare anyone to cross it.

I attribute this phenomenon to the fact that all those oxen represent peoples beliefs about something, all of which are invariably flawed, so at a very fundamental level I say (to quote the President), "Bring it on!". the sooner we finish with the slaughter of everyones favorite ox, the sooner we will be left with something more closely resembling the truth of the matter. This too has already been said in prophetic terms, and will be vindicated by the final outcome of the present trend, after all belief has been shattered and all believers are left with their mouths hanging open in hopeless despair, or sublimely happy surprise.

I am not the least impressed by the fact of who first spoke the words of truth, or what faults you the reader may be able to identify about them. I will quote the Devil himself if I find it convenient for illustrating a point. My philosophy on truth is very simple. So simple in fact that it causes many to become very angry because of it's clarity, and obvious implications. The truth must be accepted upon the terms and conditions which it imposes. Start tinkering with it to make it conform to your favorite belief, and you may believe you have found truth, which in fact you may have, but what is a bucket of pure water after an ounce of sewer sludge is stirred into it? Would you drink it or recommend it?

Truth has indeed been muddied from the sludge pit of lies which have heavily influenced man from the earliest times. However, unlike pure water, truth is not a solvent which dissolves and absorbs contaminates. Truth always stands discretely apart from all lies. It is only in the deceivers sewer where the aerated lies float on top, and subjugate the truth to the purpose of the liars whims, that the truth is covered over, and easily overlooked and ignored. Truth always stands alone as an unblemished gem of high value when it is found. It is not subject to being polluted, but only hidden just out of sight from the unwary.

I know these things to be true independently from any ancient document where a previous author saw fit to write them down for future generations. There have been many such authors in many different cultures over long periods of time, all working independently, yet arriving at the same basic conclusions. I know them to be true, not from reading those ancient writings, and "believing" them, but by understanding the significance of them, and realizing their priceless worth as representations of universal principles which only fools deny. I have thus re-discovered those fundamental universal principles and assimilated them into my own knowledge base. So, I quote from them out of respect and without apologizes. The reason I quote extensively from the Bible more than other ancient documents is really simple. It happens as a feature of my birth and early life, plus the fact that I have studied it extensively during a time of my ignorance and belief. It's the fact that I have come out of my earlier ignorance which seems to be the most disturbing to my casual readers. My quoting of the Bible is just so much more convenient to criticize than acknowledging that I may have learned something from my experience.

I don't profess to know all truth, but I do claim a considerable portion of it as my own, and it is indeed mine and I will sink or swim by it, just as everyone else is either justified or condemned by their version. It truly is a "finders keepers" proposition just as it should rightfully be. We are all responsible for our own actions, and responsibility must be accompanied with an appropriate amount of authority in order to exercise that responsibility. We are all adequately endowed with a suitable portion of both. Every Mans Truth Is His Own.

It is pointless, futile, and self incriminating to point out flaws in someone elses version of truth, and I generally try to avoid that. I usually state my own discoveries (as true education is properly called), and allow the reader to decide whether or not he can use it. Unfortunately, some readers respond as if they are being directly attacked. To which I reply simply, don't try to wear the shoe if it doesn't fit. Not one of my severe critics return that courtesy, but express their own dogmatic viewpoints and recommend them to me as if expecting me to forget every test I have conducted in evaluation of my own discoveries. Everything I write is a test to measure and refine some aspect of my understanding. It is the results of those tests conducted over many years in many different circumstances which form the basis of everything I have written. I quote original sources not as proof, but as support to show that other men far wiser than myself have reached the same conclusions in much the same manner. I enjoy constructive criticism, and consider it a learning opportunity. It serves no purpose to attack the source, even if it turns out to be a forgery. Truth is where you find it, and even liars must tell the truth before attempting to destroy it.

Consequently, I am studying most intently the advisability of even pointing out what my understanding of truth would suggest as error in someone elses understanding, especially at this late date when it seems that everyone pretty well has his mind set on something that works for them. Still, nearly everyone admits that error has advanced beyond all common sense and reason. According to my understanding, the present trend will come to it's natural end simply due to the error, and totally independent of any superhuman power which men both dread and worship. We are judged daily by default on the basis of our actions in compliance with, or repudiation of natural universal principles put in place at the creation of the universe.

All this has already been written by men much wiser than myself, but unfortunately they have been so stigmatized, that if I offer them as a source, those of a different understanding get all steamed and attack the source rather than absorb any new thought. So, I'm the messenger. Shoot me if you must, but let the wiser men of ancient times rest in peace. Most of them already died once for their upstanding character, and truthfulness.

By now the reader must be wondering where this is going. All I can do in addressing the issue of "who is Jehovah" in this milieu of mostly belief and opinion is to offer my own viewpoint which is already known to be suspect among many of my readers. However, I would point out the fact as the Attorney General knows quite well, that like beauty, suspicion resides only in the eye of the beholder. There is fundamentally nothing a person can do to avoid becoming suspect among his peers and acquaintances. The most violent murderer can walk freely through the market place, but let some poor innocent soul who happens to favor a sketch drawn up by a psychic hired by the police department stroll by and he becomes a suspect in the watchful eye of some would be informant, who has never accomplished anything of consequence in his miserable little life, suddenly sees his day in the sun, and imagines himself a hero for calling in a report. Images of the evening news flash before him as he dials the number. Already thousands of innocent lives have been ruined by this corrosive poison.

Human society is behaving as rats in an overcrowded cage, but it's not for lack of wide open spaces. Another perhaps more accurate analogy is a flock of chickens when an unblemished solid white bird gets a speck of dust and the other's pick at that speck to the point of injury, and sometimes don't stop until the chicken is dead. If this phenomenon were only limited to chickens, surely we would all be much happier, but it is not. It is very much a human phenomenon as well.

Part two will examine the reasons for that, before we more directly address the question of "Who is Jehovah that I should listen to His voice...?"
