Epidemics: real or imagined?

by  Bobby Garner
Feburary 1, 2004

When the SARS story broke a few months ago, the word "epidemic" came into widespread use almost immediately. Yet, at the present time, only some 800 deaths have been reported worldwide. Being keenly aware of the ways that words are used to mislead, and having some knowledge of word definitions, I wondered, What is really going on here? Why are they calling this an epidemic when, according to the dictionary definition, it is no such thing.

Epidemic - 1: affecting or tending to affect a disproportionately large number of individuals within a population, community, or region at the same time. 2a: exclusively prevalent. - Merriam Webster's Collegiate

Notice that the word epidemic is usually understood to indicate the spread of a disease, and this is the meaning obviously implied in the press releases. However on closer examination, it is equally obvious that they are in fact using it in connection with the "death rate". So, why are they using the term in connection with a disease that has to date claimed only around 800 lives and affected such a small percentage of the population, even in the hardest hit countries? Likely more people are dying of the common cold. This is a classic example of duplicity. Saying one thing but meaning another. You can understand it's effectiveness when you recall the scenes of people wearing dust masks as they went about their business, and the travel restriction, not to mention the economic impact. This is all orchestrated to intimidate by increasing the fear factor. It isn't necessarily a lie, but what you are made to believe about it is. It keeps our attention focused on the lie (our fear), diverting our attention away from the truth. The truth, when protected by such tactics, always goes beyond the obvious error, in this case, misuse of the word epidemic.

On May 1st, 2003, CNN reported, "There are now more than 5,600 cases of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome worldwide, with 3,647 of those in China.". They went on tp say, "...on Thursday, the country's ministry of health said. China has now reported 170 deaths. The head of the WHO's clinical network, Mark Salter, says current death rates are at 6 percent" On May 8th, NewsMax reported, "The World Health Organization today sharply raised its estimate of the SARS death rate to 14-15 percent. ... To date, SARS has infected 6,903 people and killed 495 in 29 countries."

Now 15% of 6,903 comes out to 1,035.45 deaths, not the 495 that were reportedly on record at the time which is just slightly over 7%. I expect that WHO has a lot more resources than I do, but I have no difficulty making an accurate calculation of the death rate, while their number looks more like a wild guess based on nothing more than their own hyperbole.

Even so, Where is the "epidemic"? Where is the disproportionately large number of cases (not deaths)? The Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918-1919 killed 20 to 40 million of the world population. The world population estimate for 1920 is 1.876 billion. 40 million of that number is only 2% of the total population, and that was called a pandemic which means, "occurring over a wide geographic area and affecting an exceptionally high proportion of the population".

The latest epidemic craze is Bird Flu. On Janurary 27th, 2004, the Guardian ran this headline: "Bird flu epidemic spreads to Pakistan as death toll rises to seven". It is becoming increasingly difficult to determine the difference between a news report and a Hollywood movie script. Comments like "The nightmare this time would be a flu virus leaping from birds to people", and "The potential source is the strain of bird flu...", are at best, fear mongering, and in the worst case, a program to distract our attention away from a larger problem, such as the real cause of this type of infectious desease outbreak.

Judging from the way the SARS and Bird Flu stories are being reported, articles like this one published by the Irish Examiner titled "Vaccine not virus responsible for Spanish flu" appear to have considerable credibility.

Perhaps the above article provides a clue to the answer of the question; What lies behind the SARS and Bird Flu PSYOPS propaganda?
