Whatever questions we have about the human condition, our future and our past, in the final analysis, it comes down to the matter of "first cause". There are two primary schools of thought here as you are aware. One holds that everything evolved according to natural physical scientific principles, some of which are understood and some not. The other of course is that the first cause was an intelligent Creator who exists in a realm or dimension comprehensible to us only through our minds eye or cognitive functions.
In my opinion neither of those options is more or less absurd than the other. Yet I cannot justify choosing willy nilly between them. Honest scientific investigation must be unbiased and objective. However, that makes it a very attractive profession for atheists and agnostics who are not without bias. Consequently, science offers us the Big Bang theory and the Evolution theory, neither of which can be proven by the scientific method. Scientific discovery then is rendered useless for the purpose of determining first cause, although that is the professed objective.
I prefer the intelligent design option based on what I am able to understand about science. For example, it is a proven scientific fact that matter can be converted into energy. But not yet proven, is that the opposite is also true, that energy may be converted into matter. Matter coming into existence by such a conversion would be a new creation or manifestation in objective reality. Still, this does not get us to the first cause.
Where did the energy come from, and how did the conversion process get activated? The answer to that question must necessarily, in my mind, lead us to an intelligent source.
I think it is important to recognize that absolutely NOTHING will ever be "proven" sufficiently to convince all skeptics. Going with the flow and believing what is widely accepted is not the answer either. Neither is bucking the trend in opposition to the majority an answer. It comes down to a personal choice and our ability to accept the responsibility for our choice. That is a little too frightening for most people who feel extremely vulnerable and seek comfort in associations of like minded people.
As for the 'empty guff' in the Bible, there may be some of that, but I disagree with the critics that the whole thing should be thrown out. Likewise, I don't think we should be so gullible as to accept everything at face value. Neither do I believe that we are free to pick and choose according to any preconceptions. We first have to meet the criteria for intelligent study, and seek the truth and not merely to confirm some belief which we find comfortable.

Internet Regulation and Freedom to Publish
The Federal Court in Australia has ruled that a Newsletter authored by pastor Anthony Grigor-Scott, contravened the Racial Discrimination Act. The act prohibits the publication of material "reasonably likely to offend, insult, humiliate or intimidate" a group on the grounds of its race or ethnic origin.
The offensive newsletter, entitled "Lies and the First Anniversary of the 9/11 Conspiracy", made claims the Holocaust had been used by Jews to raise money and as an excuse for foreign expansion and warmongering. Mr Grigor-Scott's defence was rejected and he was ordered to remove the material from the website.
